Hi all,
As there have been no active discussions since the Friends of WGDR officially disbanded about a year ago, this board will be closed and archived in July or August 2005.
The content will not be removed, but posting will be disabled and the site kept as a historical artifact.
The domain of WGDR.net will be maintained and the website kept active for research. Should interest in WGDR activities again come alive, posting will be re-enabled, but with a different web board.
Thanks,
Dennis

Hi all,
Rolf pointed out that the indexing wasn't working. The data got corrupted, but everything has been rebuilt and should be working correctly.

Welcome back, everyone!
Rolf and Dennis (the other Dennis, or maybe he's Dennis and I'm the other Dennis, but not this one, anyway) are moderators.
I look forward to rich & fruitful pie-throws now!

Hi all,
I'm back.
A few folks will be taking over responsibility for board management.
That means that most forums will probably remain as-is, except for a few that will be moderated for off-topic posts.
I don't believe in stifling speech, though I wouldn't mind if the totally off-topic posts were moved to an off-topic area. I hope this isn't perceived as some Great Conspiracy.
Since the opinion was almost universal that the site and board remain open, so it is.

Posting this message in all topics.
There have been requests to close these discussion boards, as there has been little recent content, and the Friends of WGDR is itself in suspended animation.
Please post brief opinions. If there is no convincing argument to keep the boards up (and you need to convince me, because without the Friends of WGDR, I'm the remaining responsible party), I'll close them on January 1.
Thanks,
Dennis

Hi again,
Gotta fix that homepage soon.
Folks, please refer to #3 in the first post below (way back in May 2002).
Thanks,
Dennis

It's been six months since my last admin post.
There's only one concern, and that's impersonation of others. I've heard from some folks whose real names have been used falsely.
I don't want to administer any double-confirmation username/password nonsense to avoid being in the middle of a slander deal.
So can you please be who you are, or at least your own alias? There are plenty of personalities to go around without adopting someone else's identity.
Thanks,
Dennis

Hi all,
The server will be down sometime this week for about an hour. It's being moved across the building at our webhost in Pittsburgh.
If you have access problems, they should be cleared up quickly.

Hello everyone,
I'm back if there are any tech questions. I've closed a few of the topics that have continued versions elsewhere.
The trip was great. Stevie attended a 5-day midwifery seminar in The Hague, and I met with composers I hadn't seen in several years.

Some fraudulent postings have appeared. In order to keep the forum completely open, no passwords are needed. As any system coordinator quickly discovers, this can result in such attacks on integrity.
However, no official "admin" postings are done outside these system announcements. If it's an official announcement about how the system works, it appears here.
The fraudulent posting presented some 'scare' information. To clarify:
1. This site collects no information that is not an automatic part of a standard web exchange on any site. Information recorded on the forum is time and date of the post, and IP address of the poster. Because IP addresses change rapidly for dialup users and often for 'full-time on-line' users, it cannot be traced without the cooperation of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and almost always only with a court order. Other information automatically exchanged during web access is file requested, length of the file sent, and the browser and operating system used. There is no "signature" or serial number involved. In other words, if you post, you can basically be anonymous.
2. This site sets no "cookies" on your computer. Cookies are normally used for sites with membership requirements, shopping carts, etc..
3. This site does not track "referrer" information, so we can't tell what site you came from before you arrived here.
4. This site does not use any scripts to track information about your computer and provide them to me. The server's raw logs contain only the information in #1 above.
Please do not fall for scare tactics from people whose goal is disruption. I'm happy for a good joke, but those fraudulent postings are meant to play on fears easily engendered in the on-line world.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at kalvos@kalvos.org (although I am leaving Amsterdam in 24 hours and will be out of email touch until the 27th).

I have added a "Creative Contributions and Commentary" section so that the Poets Corners were not orphaned in test messages and general discussion.
Those who have bookmarked these threads will want to update those bookmarks.

Hi all,
I will be gone from November 10-27. If there's anything for the calendar, please get it to Rolf by the 9th so he has a chance to format it and send it to me. Otherwise, post it in the forum.
Thanks,
Dennis

Some of you have asked how you can see just the new messages, because the threads are so long sometimes.
To the left you'll see a menu for this forum. Click on "last day" or "last week" for the latest messages, in order.

Hi all,
I'll be off duty except for emergencies for the next two weeks. I won't be reading the forum, so if there's an emergency, please send an email to forumemergency@wgdr.net
Thanks,

Hi all,
Because the timeline has changed, I would like to move the "Strategy Leading to August 15" threads to the "General Discussion" topic.
Please let me know at bathory@wgdr.net if you have a better idea! Otherwise, I'll do it tomorrow (July 30).

Hi all,
I have added a new top-level category:
Proposals, Public Statements, and Issues
The first thread in this category is about the VPR takeover rumor.

Hi all,
I have added two new top-level categories on request:
1. Friends of WGDR Listener Comments. This section is both for written and telephoned comments as well as for direct postings by listeners to the station.
2. Programming and Scheduling Ideas. If WGDR finds itself physically moving away from Goddard, that means holes in the schedule as well as a likely programmer shortage.

Hello everyone,
Because I have legal responsibility for this board while it is on my servers, I will take care of those interests -- and only those interests. This board will not be censored.

Otherwise, the board will remain as posted.

Folks, please don't post anonymously. I know it's a temptation, but please have the courtesy to tell us who you are.
I won't disable anonymous posting for now, but if it becomes epidemic, the discussion is poisoned.

Hi all,
Now that many folks are familiar with the discussion board, I'm removing the topic descriptions from the main page.
The conversation titles will provide a pretty good idea of what's going on there.

Hello everyone,
Welcome to the Friends of WGDR Discussion Forum.
This is an open, public forum. To stay open for all, please follow a few staightforward guidelines:
1. Keep on topic. General subjects are posted on the "topic" page; choose the best one, and create a new conversation if you need to.
2. Keep it clean. The board won't be censored, but it is a community board, so post for everyone's eyes.
3. Keep it legal. Libelous comments will cause the entire topic to be removed and perhaps the board to be shut down.
4. Use "Getting Started" if you don't know how to post ... make it easy to read, easy to answer.
This board is hosted by MaltedMedia at http://maltedmedia.com/ ... the same folks who create Kalvos & Damian's New Music Bazaar at http://kalvos.org/
